“…but the last thing you wanted a witch to do was get bored and start making her own amusements, because witches sometimes had famously erratic ideas about what was amusing.”
I lived in Blowing Rock NC for two years. If you aren’t familiar it’s a tiny little ..sleepy town near to Boone. Tourism is insane during Autumn because it’s so beautiful and it has that olden days feel. You can browse antique and handmade items, sit in the park, there are a few art galleries and …of course… there is ice cream!
Autumn was the perfect time for a witchy shoot out in the woods with The Art Of Victor Ellison! We had “met” on facebook months prior and then in person at the local food spot in town. I cannot tell you how difficult it is to network,as a performer or as a model,in a town like Blowing Rock/Boone. Good photographers are next to extinct and the really great ones shoot landscape! I was lucky that he considered putting me in front of his lens!
In all honesty I made this costume for another shoot. I drove two hours to that location,my car broke a belt five minutes from the photographers house…and he left me stranded. Not a great day. BUT I think it was for the best! I deleted that guy and moved on!
Victor knows the great spots! He had a perfect location in mind for my witchy theme and was totally down to shoot something costume-y. Not all photographers are!
So I’m following him to his cool spot at this point and here is where I always want to mention….ladies and gents please don’t follow rando photographers that you meet online to rando places. Please do background research, speak with the person….feel them out…meet in person first. If you feel uncomfortable, take an escort. I personally feel that if I need to take an escort then I just shouldn’t be going.
Yes I’m taking photos while driving…another thing you shouldn’t do. It was beautiful out though and I hadn’t been this way before. First location setup was easy. It’s a beautiful fence and nature along a path. It’s perfectly Autumn.
“A witch is someone who has dedicated her life to learning about the connections between things. She studies the different cycles and her place in them. She learns how to use the energy in herself and in the world to make changes. And most of all, she tries to make the world a better place for herself and other people.”

The hat was a monster,I have to say. It was my first time handmaking a stereotypical witch hat from scratch. I made it from velvet theatre curtains that had been gifted to me to use as fire blankets during my fire performances. I sewed random bits and pieces onto it to match the dress. The pointy part has a lot of stuffing in it. It was difficult to keep up. It also turned out a lot bigger than I had envisioned but I went with it. The bigger the better, ehhhh? I made this whole costume for 0 dollars. I used all materials on hand and repurposed them all together. The only part not made by me is the waist cincher.
Walking along the path were some beautiful spots! It just kills me how there is so much beauty up here and I don’t have 100000 pictures of me in it haha. Victor,if you ever read this,we need to shoot again!!
The natural size of a coven is one. Witches only get together when they can’t avoid it.”
― Terry Pratchett
Walking along the path some more I was able to setup some of my props I had brought. Things that people probably don’t notice is that little pieces of my friends are included in this setup. I have candles used at weddings, items gifted to me,Coltons old books, flowers from events or that had been given to me…just little odds and ends.
“I was born on the night of Samhain, when the barrier between the worlds is whisper-thin and when magic, old magic, sings its heady and sweet song to anyone who cares to hear it.”

“At such times the universe gets a little closer to us. They are strange times, times of beginnings and endings. Dangerous and powerful. And we feel it even if we don’t know what it is. These times are not necessarily good, and not necessarily bad. In fact, what they are depends on what *we* are.”
~ Terry Pratchett
The smoke coming out of my box is courtesy of a colored smoke bomb. The box is lined to prevent the tiny sparks from catching fire to anything. I lit it,closed the box and then opened it when Victor instructed. That’s how we got the shot and made sure our surroundings were safe. Safety first everyone!
Moving on down the trail,Victor had another idea for a location. It was a broken down structure out further…over the river and through the woods 🙂 It was a little trek and I had brought all my stuff in this overstuffed huge duffle. Books get heavy after a while so he carried it for me. So nice!! Poor guy.
I set up some props at this next location! I even added some dollar store black birds that you can see in some of the photos if you look closely 🙂 #magical
I loved what was left of this structure. The weather was great this day and Victor is just the best to work with. He’s just so chill. I don’t ever feel any type of pressure or stress to be a certain way in front of the camera. I know that his images are going to be beautiful so when I’m doing my part I’m not even worried. Also…like I say..he knows some great spots to shoot at!!

Smoke bombs are fun to work with! I feel like it really adds something to the shots. They last about 3 seconds though so if you experiment then be aware. Keeping the smoke confined to the small space of the box worked wonders for this.

And until next time…..
