“And into the forest I go,To lose my mind but to find my soul”~John Muir
Mori Kei or Forest Style is an alternative fashion rooted in Japanese street fashion. It combines Earth toned colors with comfy draped layers and a touch of whimsy! Such items as Boots,Lace, pearls, dresses with stockings and sweaters are a few staples of this fashion.
Two friends of mine,Danny and Alysia, joined me in the park for a fun day of shooting with Melanie Mae Photography. Each lady put together her own Mori Kei inspired ensemble!
“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.”
“Yet for the first time in three days, I want something. I want the forest lord to turn me into a cedar. The very oldest islanders say that if you are in the interior mountains on the night when the forest lord counts his trees, he includes you in the number and turns you into a tree.”
High Point City Lake Park is one of my favorite places to shoot at or just to visit. It’s old, historical and has a beautiful lake. Around Autumn the woods surrounded the lake are alive with vibrant colors! It’s a peaceful retreat during the week.
“Solitude is the soil in which genius is planted, creativity grows, and legends bloom; faith in oneself is the rain that cultivates a hero to endure the storm, and bare the genesis of a new world, a new forest.”
In creating my look for the shoot I pinned 2 skirts into the folds of a ruffled dress, worse a long vest over that and held it all together with a waist cincher. The head-piece is made from a cutting off an old sweater that I embellished with a rose and some ribbon.I added gloves and mix matched stocking to complete the look.
“It was a though we’d been living for a year in a dense grove of old trees, a cluster of firs, each with its own rhythm and character, from whom our bodies had drawn not just shelter but perhaps even a kind of guidance as we grew into a family.”
Mori Kei is so much fun! I think I could live happily in these clothes…deep in a forest somewhere. Well maybe for a week-long vacation anyway 🙂 I’m a city girl for sure but it’s fun to play!
“Twigs in my hair, calves striped red and my skirt smudged in meadowtones. The forest underlined me, accentuated me, illustrated me.
