“Winter Is Coming” : A Mood Board

“My old grandmother always used to say, Summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever.”
~George R.R. Martin

Winter is almost here…even in the Greensboro area. Up until a week or so ago we still had temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s. I’m so ready for cold,it’s ridiculous. I love my boots, blanket scarves, comfy hats and sweaters!

I didn’t used to be a Winter gal but now I own it!

“Nothing burns like the cold. But only for a while. Then it gets inside you and starts to fill you up, and after a while you don’t have the strength to fight it.”
~George R.R. Martin

I spent two Winters in Blowing Rock,NC. I now live in Greensboro. Here we tend to get ice versus snow. I really do miss it.

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
~Lewis Carroll

“Because the birdsong might be pretty,
But it’s not for you they sing,
And if you think my winter is too cold,
You don’t deserve my spring.”
~Erin Hanson

Most everyone has their Yule/Christmas tree up by now! We put ours up around Thanksgiving…I can hardly contain myself! Ours basically just has Nightmare Before Christmas ornaments on it. I haven’t really taken much time to get anything else. I lived many years with just a 2 foot bright pink tree in an apartment so having a big tree again has been fun 🙂 It’s kinda bare but we make due 🙂 There is usually a kitten up in it anyway! She’s the BEST ornament! She’s only broken three so far……………..

“Snow flurries began to fall and they swirled around people’s legs like house cats. It was magical, this snow globe world.”
~Sarah Addison Allen

Don’t warm drinks just taste a million times better when it’s cold out?? Hot chocolate, frapps, cocoa….cider!

Most everyone has their favorite Starbucks seasonal drink! They have more and more to choose from each year. Mine is a tie between Peppermint Mocha and Chestnut Praline. You can get the pep mocha year round but I only have it during Winter anyway. This year Starbucks has thrown in a super special “Fruit Cake” frapp for THIS WEEK ONLY!

Fruit Cake Frapp, Hazelnut creme, cinnamon, dried fruit, caramel and matcha. These ingredients lead me to believe you could probably order this year round if you like it enough 🙂 Photo courtesy of Starbucks.

I don’t like fruit cake but why is it that since Starbucks has made it into a frapp…I’m now dying to try it? Haha. Oh well,I’ll be checking this out today 🙂 I can’t resist a new frap.

Anyone else find themselves wanting to bake more when it cools down outside? I made gingerbread men for the first time this year!

That’s me in Winter…leggings, boots, blanket scarves, cookies, frapps and all the Christmas music and peppermint bark I can handle!

Hope everyone has an amazing upcoming Yule/Solstice/Winter 🙂

Until next time…

Warmest wishes,

“This Is Halloween”

“Halloween shadows played upon the walls of the houses. In the sky the Halloween moon raced in and out of the clouds. The Halloween wind was blowing, not a blasting of wind but a right-sized swelling, falling, and gushing of wind. It was a lovely and exciting night, exactly the kind of night Halloween should be.”
~Eleanor Estes

Halloween/Samhain Is one of my favorite times of the year. I have many yearly traditions around this time of year including carving up Jack O Lanterns, attending the midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show and watching loads of spooky movies!

The air fees and smells magical. Autumn colors are all around and it’s time to start dragging out jeans, comfy hats and hoodies.

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
~L.M. Montgomery

Makeup becomes vampy and dark 🙂

And all of the best movies are on! Do you have favorites you watch around this time of the year??

And don’t forget the special shows! My absolute favorite is Roseanne!! I watch them on repeat every year!!

Ohh glorious candy!!! What did you wish for as a kid?? I always loved Milky Way bars and Kit Kats! Themed treats at parties are always so much fun this time of year! Starbucks drops it’s Pumpkin Spice and Salted Caramel frapps and we all go insane! They also usually have one Halloween themed drink as well, like the Frankenfrap!

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”
~Albert Camus

As someone who costumes on the regular Halloween is no exception for me! Here’s some of my favorites over the years that remind me of great times!

Carving the pumpkin is one of my favorite yearly activities. These days we take pumpkin decorating to a whole new level tho! There’s carving of all kinds still but also shaving and painting!

“A pumpkin lives but once a year
when someone sets its soul afire
and on that night it stirs up fear
until its flame is snuffed.
But e’en one night of eerie light is fright enough.”
~Richelle E. Goodrich

Happy Halloweek Everyone!!

The Night Circus : Mood Board

“The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.

The Night Circus, By Erin Morgenstern, is a story of an ancient duel between two schools of magical knowledge: old and new.

The circus arrives without warning. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

“We lead strange lives, chasing our dreams around from place to place.”

“Only the ship is made of books, its sails thousands of overlapping pages, and the sea it floats upon is dark black ink.”

Le Cirque des Rêves, the Circus of Dreams, features such wonders and “ethereal enigmas” as a blooming garden made all of ice, acrobats soaring without a net, and a vertical cloud maze where patrons who get lost simply step off and float gently to the floor. The circus has no set schedule, appearing without warning and leaving without notice; they travel in a train disguised as an ordinary coal transport. A network of devoted fans styling themselves “rêveurs” (“dreamers”) develops around the circus; they identify to each other by adding a splash of red to garb that otherwise matches the characteristic black and white of the circus tents.

“I would have written you, myself, if I could put down in words everything I want to say to you. A sea of ink would not be enough.’ ‘But you built me dreams instead.”

“I couldn’t tell the difference between what was real and what I wanted to be real.”

“Though I have seen a great deal of the sights, traveled a number of the available paths, there are always corners that remain unexplored, doors that remain unopened.”

Celia ultimately finds a way to avoid the terrible fate of the competition. In a way, she and Marco simultaneously withdraw from competition and enter a dream world together. Although they can never interact with the physical world again, they are together, and will enjoy the circus together for as long as their souls wander the earth for their own magical “happily ever after.”

“Most maidens are perfectly capable of rescuing themselves in my experience, at least the ones worth something, in any case.”

“You think, as you walk away from Le Cirque des Rêves and into the creeping dawn, that you felt more awake within the confines of the circus.
You are no longer quite certain which side of the fence is the dream.”

All quotes by Erin Morgenstern from her book,The Night Circus. Check it out before Hollywood makes it into a horrible movie 🙂 I do not own the photos presented in this blog.

Autumn’s Coming! A Mood Board :)

“Of all the things I still remember
Summer’s never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain
In the middle of September we’d still play out in the rain…”
When does Autumn/Fall begin for you?
For some it’s when Starbucks releases their Fall drinks 🙂 For others it’s just a date on the calendar. For me,I believe it’s whenever we get that first day that doesn’t have quite the same sting of Summer in it. They say to never trust September and they are correct. One day it’s Autumn and the next it’s blazing hot again!
“But the days grow short
When you reach September
When the autumn weather
Turns leaves to flame…”
~Willie Nelson

“It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.”
~Sarah Addison Allen

With Autumn comes so many new looks in colors and style for hair color, fashion and makeup! I’ve been loving all the new colors this year. I can’t wait to play around with some browns and burgundy tones!

Fashion gets a little more snuggly in Autumn, yet there are some days when the sun still wants to play.  I personally cannot wait for it to cool down. I used to hate wearing jackets, boots, scarves and sweaters…but now I prefer it! It may be time to move back to a cooler climate!

“Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The morning of the first September was crisp and golden as an apple.”
― J.K. Rowling

In Autumn foods and scents get “spicier”…as in pumpkin spice!  Anyone a pumpkin spice fan? Anyone sick of hearing about it? Haha! I tried my very first Starbucks Pumpkin Spice frap this year and it wasn’t bad. I’m partial to the salted caramel mocha though! It rocks my world!

I do love the smell of most pumpkin spice themed items. I spent some time in bath & Body Works crying over Pumpkin Cupcake scented lotions that were too expensive and candles that were on sale 🙂 Le Sigh….

Also apples! When I worked in downtown Blowing Rock tourists came for miles to get Honeycrisp apples. I love apple pie and this year I am going to try my hand at making one!

Also looking forward to all my shows coming back on! American Horror Story started with a bang last night! It’s going to be an amazing season, for sure! NC theme? Heck yes!! Lucifer and Younger start next week I believe. Those are just a few of my favorites. Can’t wait to see what they all have in store. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the Hallmark Movies& Mysteries channel lately. They really have some great shows! Murder,She Baked and The Garage Sale Mysteries I highly recommend! Mystery stories always put me in a fall mood.

“But when fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous ass as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. ~Stephen King

And I have indeed missed it…. ❤
