Just What I Was Looking For!

For my next trick…I’ll think of a book and then will it into existence at Carolina Thrift!

For a while now I’ve been debating reading the Outlander series. I’m obsessed with the show but since I’m now up to season three I wasn’t sure if I wanted to start over and read from the beginning. Yesterday I sat around….debated buying it,checking it out of a library….or never reading it at all.

Today I walked into a thrift store and it was right there on the self. Thank you thrift store gods!

It was 1.99 but on sale for .99! Cant beat that unless you got it for free like the original owner haha.

I’m super excited to read this. So far aside from a few minor details that were bigger to me than the plot….it’s right on with the show. I’m about 200 pages in so far πŸ™‚

I also picked up a copy of Eat,Pray,Love. This is one of my favorite movies but I’ve never read the book. It’s time to do just that!

This last book I picked up just had a catchy title and seems interesting. My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding. Various short stories,on the creepy side,by some well known authors. I like it πŸ™‚

I paid just a few dollars for all three of these books and they are in perfect shape! It’s so nice to have so much reading material again!

Victorian Inspired Ariel

In my world I get commission requests for so many variations on Disney princesses. Some people want to throw down a grand…some want to keep it under $30. Well,I have a game I play against myself,a challenge if you will,to see what I can accomplish (for myself) for Β under $20.00 πŸ™‚ All photos except group shot are from Paul Cory Photography.

I’m lucky,I know,bc I do have lots of material to pull from. Most everything for this costume came directly from my supplies. The only items purchased specifically for this look are the wig and an XL green dress by Kathie Lee from Goodwill. I also picked up some white fabric needed for various costumes and brown spray paint for the shoe fins. So My total for this costume was right at $18.96 ( I will break this down later in the blog). And here is the final result :

And here is the breakdown for me with photos:

  • The first item I found that made me want to make this costume is this bright green (photo doesn’t do it justice colorwise) Kathie Lee dress obviously 90’s style πŸ™‚ I was drawn to this bc it’s an XL so it has loads of great fabric for use. Also…the details are amazing. I immediately knew that I could make some killer spats from this sucker. I found it at Goodwill for $5.00

  • I knew I wanted “shoe fins”. I wasn’t too sure how I wanted to make a first version of these …but as I was cruising Walmart I walked by the paint aisle and saw paint stirrers. Magical. The perfect thing. Since they go with paint…Walmart can’t charge you for these. I tried to pay for them,I asked two different people…but NO. So yay! FREE. I picked up Brown paint on sale for $2.99 and a lot more white fabric than I would need for this haha. I had other projects to do πŸ™‚ So the cost for that was $2.97

It’s probably obvious how I made these once you look at them again….haha…. Paint stirrers painted brown, hot glued to fabric. This is also a shot of the spats I made from the dress. Literally just cut the pieces off and tied them around the shoes. the good thing is…with spats you don’t have to use Victorian boots (I am though) you can use any boot and make it look snazzy with this extra fabric piece.

So my total for this is $18.96

  • Green dress for materials: $5.00 Goodwill
  • Shoe fin materials: $5.96
  • Red wig: $8 from Ebay

Other items used in this are:

  • Black gloves I sewed some of the green material from the dress onto as well as little white buttons. These are not necessary but if you wanted to go that route you can pick these up for as little as $3-$10
  • The corset purchased previously for $9.99 on Ebay
  • Ruffled purple shirt from Goodwill $3.75
  • White ruffled bought at a thrift store for .25
  • Striped thigh highs purchased on clearance at Spirit Halloween $1.99
  • Victorian Boots: Ebay $9.99
  • Black top hat from Party City $9.99 which I glued every random piece of crap lying around on my coffee table. I mean that literally. My boyfriend chews on things so there were bottle tops and weird pieces of plastic hanging out. They are forever on this hat now. I also glued seas shells, empty thread spools, some netting and a fork (dinglehopper) on top πŸ™‚
  • The green overskirt was made from the green dress materials.
  • I’m wearing a black skirt I already had under the green one for aesthetic.
  • Fluffy petticoats bought through various trips to Carolina thrift for .99 each
  • The parasol was borrowed.

So total in purchasing everything would be roughly around $60.00 To cut corners thrift stores and your closet are great! Like I said…most of this I had. I wear that purple shirt regularly. Just so happens it works perfect for this.

This was a group shoot I organized at Castle McCulloch. All models made/provided their characters and costuming. I’ll most likely do a separate blog for that event. I have many awesome photos to share of the other models involved πŸ™‚ This photo below was taken by Marie Otero in about 1 minute. She rocked it πŸ™‚ It’s the only group shot I received and she snapped it while she was leaving. #winning I LOVE IT.

Group shot by Marie Otero

Me and the bright red wig didn’t get along. I actually hated it,haha. Idk that Ariel is the character for me. But for one day, surrounded by fun people,I think I rocked it.

People have asked me, “How did you keep the shoe fins on?” The answer is…I didn’t. They are first off hot glued to my boots. That lasted about 30 mins into the shoot. They popped right off, glue included so no damage to my shoes. Luckily I had brought a second costume bc I knew that was going to happen. The second model of the fins uses leather straps and is more of a steampunk look. You’ll see that later though.

Ever evolving,ever having fun….Moonkitty πŸ™‚

Han Solo/Leia Mesh Up THANNG!

No shocker a Star Wars something or somethings was going to eventually happen. I get comments on my hair daily. “Princess Leia!!!” andddd it doesn’t look that much like Leia if I’m being honest. I’ll take that compliment though! Been doing this since 90’s Gwen Stefani, peeps!

Ain’t no hollar back girrrrrrrl.

Anywho! Boone Goodwill is a magical magical place. I cannot say this enough and you have no idea. YOU WILL THOUGH. So much of my everyday cosplay has been found at this wonderful place! This day was no exception.

I had already had an idea of doing a Han/Leia type mesh thang. I wanted his general well known clothes and her sort of hair.Since I go to conventions with my cosplay group ,The Fandames ,I also volunteer during the events. What I wear needs to be functional. I liked the idea of using the Chewbacca backpack that I was coveting from The Gamefather in Boone. I had seen another Han cosplayer use it and she was adorbs! This way I didn’t need a purse with me as well πŸ™‚

Off to Goodwill. AND….I found every single thing I would need including the weapon. CRAZYY!!!

So the first item I find is this and it sets my mind on fire! School girl Han/Leia thingy!!! YESSS! So this is an authentic school uniform. It’s def not made with room in the chest area haha. It flattens me like cray but it doesn’t matter. It’s a top covering cosplay anyways. The second thing comes easy bc I just need an off white shirt. I find this in an off white 100% silk Brooks Brothers blouse (like dayummm). I bought a pair of size XXXL red shorts to make the red stripes on the uniform. For all three of these materials I paid $8.50

The pin was bought at the convention,Cosplay America. I felt I needed it. It was $1.00

The rest was easy. I picked up a random belt to go across the waist of the uniform $.50 and a pair of knee high socks $.50 I should have bought a few pairs of the socks bc they are fantastic and they had them in three colors and in BULK!

BUT at this point…even though I have found all this great stuff…I told myself I could not possibly do this cosplay unless I found a weapon too…today…in THIS store. Bc that’s how I roll. I’m insane in the brain. AND BOOM!!! They had it. The perfect starting piece to make into the Blaster model I want πŸ™‚ Β $.25

So grand total of everything so far with added pin that I purchased later at the con is $10.75

My one splurge for this was the backpack. I had wanted this for over a year and now I wanted it for this cosplay so I talked myself into paying $29.99 for it. BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT!!!! I could not have been happier with this at the con. So nice to always have my hands free.

The other parts of this outfit I already had. These were mary jane shoes and clip in bangs. Haha. My total for this costume ,including splurge,is : $40.74

All of this costume is reusable or rewearable in everyday life. The blouse is SO SO NICE!!

Everyone asks about my bangs. “did you cut your hair??” all day long and NO. I will never have bangs again. I have crazy curly hair that never lays right. Fake bangs are magical and always look like perfect hair. if I feel the need to have bangs… I pop them in and get over it πŸ™‚ Mine are Jessica Simpson brand (from ebay) for $4.99 that included shipping. Idk how people sell stuff so cheap online. It’s wild! The company did a fantastic job on these. They have what looks like real highlights so they can match any hair color within the range of that color. I have this set in Chestnut.

^ That looks funny πŸ™‚ hehehe. Anyhow the convention was small but fun. I volunteered both days and that was such a great time. I got to meet a lot of new people and some people I had been friends with online for a while. We felt like friends already πŸ™‚

Jayce aka Photos NXS was in attendance and he is amazing at cosplay photography. I knew I had to grab him at some point for photos. I was on a schedule with volunteering so him and I literally had maybe ten mins tops to squeeze in a “shoot”. I think I spent 5 of that trying to find my way outdoors to him (haha). But I’m sure glad I did!

Cosplay America did not allow any sort of “guns” so i wasn’t able to take my Blaster. Bummers.

No it’s not the most extreme cosplay on Earth…it doesn’t have to be! It’s iconic and people connect to it.I personally connect to it. I had so many people who loved my take on this character mix. I had basically thought of this as a Han and Leia’s daughter sort of thing. But now that I’ve met Kylo Ren I don’t want to be his sister! He is loveeeee πŸ™‚

So BOOM cosplay on a budget. You can do this. There is no right or wrong way to be inspired by what you love. And Thrift stores are your frand!
